Is moving to a nearby suburb actually cheaper?

I’m looking at a city where housing is pretty expensive, and I’m wondering if living just outside the city would actually make a meaningful difference. Has anyone moved to a nearby suburb and found that the savings were worth it?

It can be, but I don’t think I’d look at rent alone. A cheaper place outside the city might mean spending more on gas, parking or commuting every day, especially if you still need to go into the city for work.
I’d compare the total monthly cost rather than just the apartment price. Things like transportation, utilities, groceries and even how much time you’ll spend commuting can make a difference.
Sometimes paying a little more to live closer to everything can actually work out better, depending on your lifestyle.
