What should I look for when choosing a city for remote work ?

I work remotely, so I have a little more flexibility about where I live. I’m trying to narrow down a few cities, but I’m not sure what factors I should prioritize. Obviously cost of living matters, but I’m also thinking about housing, transportation, safety, weather and having things to do outside of work. Beyond that, I care about walkability and not feeling isolated once the workday ends. I’d like to have a real social life outside of sitting in front of a laptop. For anyone who works remotely, what ended up mattering most when you chose a city?

I’d probably start with cost of living, but for remote work I think lifestyle matters just as much. You have more freedom to choose a city based on what you actually enjoy rather than worrying about the daily commute.
I’d look at housing, walkability, safety, internet, transportation and what there is to do after work. Cities like Austin, Denver, Portland, Chicago or Boston could be interesting starting points, depending on your budget and the kind of lifestyle you want. I’d also pay attention to whether there are places where people naturally socialize, because working remotely can get pretty isolating if you’re somewhere that requires a car for everything.
I would also narrow it down to a few cities and compare them based on the things that matter most to you rather than simply picking whichever city tops a “best places to live” list.
